A Classic Example of My Overthinking

It is a total coincidence that both my husband and one of my friends have, in different circumstances, felt the need to explain to me "who they are." You know, like a therapist or someone would have you define yourself? What is interesting to me is that they used nouns to describe themselves. Things like father, pilot, sister, mother. You get the idea, yes? I never realized it, but when asked to introduce/define myself or think about who I am or want to be, I always use adjectives like insanely loyal, feisty, thoughtful, obsessive, etc... What does this mean? How would you describe yourself? Nouns or adjectives?

Definitely adjectives. Those noun people are weirdos. Heh. The nouns only describe you SOME of the time, whereas the adjectives apply ALL OF THE TIME.

Tessie - EXACTLY my point! Adjectives apply to all roles and situations. those noun people need help.

How funny! I never thought about this but I use adjectives too. Once, I had to stand in front of a group of people and talk about myself. Everyone else used nouns so I did too. My speech was awful! I'm not comfortable using nouns to describe myself! And who cares about where you went to school, or where you grew up?? Most people want to know the interesting/juicy details about you...occasionally insane, obsessive compulsive about cleaning, likes things in her house 'just so', loves to gossip, loves to shop, remembers details most people forget, yadda yadda yadda. That's the fun stuff!

I always hated that question, but now that I think about it, I used nouns when I was younger (basketball player, animal lover) but now that I'm older I use adjectives (loyal, bitchy). I guess I grew out of my oddness!

A noun description is just like a "My name is________" sticker that we all have to put on when we go to some event that no one knows us. The adjective describes the personality. When you die, you'll always be remembered as a mother, father, employee, etc, but I want to be remembered as that crazy aunt who had all the cats. Or, the cousin who could laugh at themselves or was brave enough to jump from the tallest diving board at the swimming pool. Describe/remember me as brave, crazy, sometimes loud, cries at the drop of a hat, loves her family and chocolate.

Adjectives all the way.

I think I use both ... adjectives to describe the noun I am using I suppose ... maybe all of you "just adjective people" have a better sense of who you actually are that way you dont feel the need to justify it out loud .. which I think is great and something I should consider more:)

Oh wow. I love this topic! I always start with the nouns in my head, but I don't really LIKE those as my description...wife, mother, blah blah blah...that is just kind of what I'm DOING, not who I AM. And I never thought to define it better with adjectives. I am quick, worried, academic-minded, and prone to napping....this is SO much better than the wife/mother B.S!! You have liberated me!

Ha. This is a question I always LOATHE when I see it. And I'm sure it's because I'm a noun person - "(ex)navy wife", "mother", "social worker"... and these things, it turns out, is what I am to OTHER people. Now what I am to myself. Apparently, I need to put some more thought into my answer to this question...

This is like the, "If you were a tree what kind of tree would you be?" question. No one has a really good answer. My answer always depends upon who I'm talking to. But adjective are certainly more interesting.
